But here are the top 10 reasons why many Overseas Filipinos, especially Filipino Americans, refuse to be called “Flips”:
10. They don’t like to be mistaken as “Flip floppers” in the styles of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and/or President Barack H. Obama.
9. They don’t like to emulate former President George Herbert Bush and declare, “Read my Flips, no new taxes.”
8. Many Overseas Filipinos like to proceed to college and, hence, their ambition is not to flip burgers at fast-food chains.
7. Many of them have stopped the dirty habit of buying cigarettes in flip-top boxes.
6. They do not want to be mistaken for sugary sodas like the “Flipsi-Cola.”
5. They have a higher IQ than Flipper, the Dolphin.
4. They don’t want to be called by fellow Asians of Chinese descent as “flipvolous” or by the Japanese as “fripvorous”.
3. Filipino Americans who serve in, or retired from the U. S. Navy like columnist Jesse Jose, know by heart the naval adage that “loose Flips (and wagging tongues) sink ships.”
2. They don’t want to be treated as the “flip side” (or opposite side), as explained by syndicated columnist and talk-show host Charles Krauthammer, who said "The flip side of retrospectively savaging the loser is beatifying … the winner." And …
1. They don’t like to be known as the Asian equivalent of the “French Kiss” and emulate them by doing “Flips-to-lips kissing.”
